OpenAI ships GPT-5.6-Cyber behind a new Daybreak Red tier
OpenAI split its Daybreak security program into two access tiers on August 10 and launched GPT-5.6-Cyber, a purpose-trained model available only through the more permissive Daybreak Red tier for authorized vulnerability research and exploit validation. The model completed 95% of requests in OpenAI's internal advanced cybersecurity evaluation, against 57.3% for GPT-5.5-Cyber and 1.5% for GPT-5.6 Sol under normal safeguards, and is the first OpenAI model to reach the High cyber capability threshold in its Preparedness Framework. Before launch it found two previously unknown Chrome V8 flaws, one patched by Google as CVE-2026-15903, and OpenAI is making hardware security keys mandatory on all individual Daybreak accounts from September 1.
