Paul Christiano joins OpenAI Foundation board

OpenAI appointed alignment researcher Paul Christiano to the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation board on September 9, 2026, seating him on the Safety and Security Committee with governance over safety practices at the for-profit. In a personal statement he said the industry, including OpenAI, is not on track to cut catastrophic loss-of-control risk to an acceptable level, putting his subjective odds at 4 percent over one year and 15 percent over three years. He is a non-voting observer on the OpenAI Group PBC board.
