Anthropic says Claude found a CRISPR-like enzyme system

Anthropic said Claude agents, after about 21 hours, roughly 950 sessions and 210 million tokens, spotted a repeating DNA pattern beside a jumbo-phage reverse transcriptase and named the system array-associated reverse transcriptases, or ART. The company said the RT itself had been reported before, that Claude appears to have been first to notice the associated repeat array and partner gene, and that it does not yet know what ART does. Independent scientists called the pattern intriguing while warning it is not evidence of a CRISPR-rival gene-editing tool.
