The first venture-backed fighter prime
Anduril is the company that turned Silicon Valley's defense thesis into flying hardware. Founded in 2017 by Oculus creator Palmer Luckey and Palantir veterans including CEO Brian Schimpf, it set out to sell software-defined, mass-producible autonomous weapons instead of the exquisite, slow platforms that still dominate Pentagon budgets. Nine years later that bet is no longer a pitch. The Air Force ordered Anduril's FQ-44A Fury into production in June 2026 as one of two Collaborative Combat Aircraft, the Army signed a ten-year, $20 billion Lattice enterprise vehicle in March, and a $5 billion Series H in May valued the company at $61 billion.
That combination is why Anduril matters even to readers who do not follow defense procurement. It sits at the intersection of three industrial shifts: the militarization of autonomy, the scramble to refill Western munitions magazines after Ukraine, and the Pentagon's new willingness to buy from venture-backed primes. Helsing is Europe's answer to the same problem. Anduril is the original, and the more heavily armed.
From a virtual border wall to a combat jet
Palmer Luckey left Facebook in 2017, recruited Trae Stephens from Founders Fund, and incorporated Anduril on April 20 of that year with Matt Grimm, Joe Chen, and later Schimpf as CEO. The first product was also the most controversial: Lattice running on solar-powered Sentry towers that Customs and Border Protection piloted on the southern border. Civil-liberties groups still criticize that virtual wall. It became a program of record anyway, with more than 290 towers installed by 2023. Early money came from Founders Fund. By September 2019 the company was a unicorn.
The hardware catalog grew by acquisition and by building ahead of the request. Area-I brought the Altius tube-launched family in 2021. Dive Technologies became Ghost Shark. Adranos added solid rocket motors. Blue Force Technologies supplied the airframe that Anduril rebuilt into Fury. The April 2024 Collaborative Combat Aircraft down-select, beating Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman, is the moment the company stopped being a sensors-and-software shop. The 2025 takeover of Microsoft's troubled $22 billion IVAS mixed-reality headset program, and the Meta partnership that produced EagleEye, closed a circle: Luckey's original VR company is now a partner to the defense firm he founded after being fired.
Lattice is the product. Everything else is a node.
Anduril's catalog looks like a weapons inventory: Ghost and Bolt drones, Roadrunner interceptors, Barracuda cruise missiles, Ghost Shark extra-large autonomous submarines, Copperhead underwater munitions, and Thunder, an autonomous tilt-rotor with Archer. The unifying layer is Lattice, an AI command-and-control platform that fuses sensors, classifies threats, and lets a small team task a large fleet. Lattice for Mission Autonomy is the hardware-agnostic version of that idea, one operator supervising mixed teams of air, land, and sea robots. The Army's Joint Interagency Task Force 401 made it the tactical counter-drone backbone under the first $87 million task order of the $20 billion enterprise agreement.
That software layer is also the contest Anduril has not yet won on its flagship aircraft. The Air Force is buying Fury airframes and mission-autonomy software on separate contracts, a policy Reuters described as software sold separately. In June 2026 Anduril sat in a six-vendor autonomy pool with General Atomics, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Collins Aerospace, and Shield AI. A down-select toward a single autonomy provider is still targeted for summer 2027. Winning the jet and losing the brain would leave Anduril as a contract manufacturer of someone else's software.
Build it first, then wait for the contract
Anduril's industrial moat is a habit of spending its own capital to field a product before the Pentagon writes a requirement, then showing up with flying hardware. Roadrunner went from napkin to fieldable interceptor in under two years. Fury flew 556 days after a clean-sheet start. Arsenal-1, the hyperscale factory near Columbus, Ohio, began Fury production in March 2026, three months early, and rolled the first Ohio-built aircraft on July 27, 126 days on the line and 557 days after the project was announced. The company has committed $910.5 million in capital and about 4,000 jobs by 2035. The line is sized for 150 aircraft a year at three-shift capacity. Roadrunner, Barracuda, and a classified platform are supposed to join it by year-end.
The same thesis is being exported. Australia's A$1.7 billion Ghost Shark program of record delivered its first production extra-large autonomous submarine from a Sydney factory in November 2025, on budget and ahead of schedule. In July 2026 Poland's state defense group PGZ agreed to build the surface-launched Barracuda-500M in Bydgoszcz, Anduril's first European production site, aiming at thousands of roughly 900 km-range missiles. The counter-example landed the same month: Bloomberg reported that a year-old Rheinmetall partnership covering European Barracuda and Fury variants had been significantly scaled back. Localizing production wins allies. It does not automatically win industrial partners.
A combat jet, a cruise missile, and a headset still in prototype
Fury is the prestige product. It first flew on October 31, 2025, fired a live AIM-120 AMRAAM on July 10, 2026, and, Anduril executives said on September 14, has already flown in formation alongside F-35s, though the fighter is not yet controlling it. The Air Force has permanently delivered a Fury to the Experimental Operations Unit at Creech, which is flying it multiple times a day. On the same day Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink formally named the jet FQ-44A Fury, named General Atomics' competitor FQ-42A Vengeance, and raised the CCA in-service target to at least 500 aircraft by 2032 from a prior goal of over 150 by the end of the decade, a figure likely to include Increment 2 designs as well. Anduril says the unit cost is well below $20 million at currently contemplated quantities.
The rest of the catalog is about magazines, not prestige. A May 2026 production agreement covers at least 3,000 surface-launched Barracuda-500M missiles over three years. A July framework targets thousands of air-launched Barracuda-500s a year. Taiwan finished a 291-unit Altius-600M buy in March 2026 and signed an August letter of offer for 2,032 more Altius systems. The weak joint is the soldier headset. After taking IVAS from Microsoft in 2025, Anduril is running a second prototype cycle on EagleEye-based hardware. Hundreds of Phase 1 units went to the 75th Ranger Regiment in August 2026. An Army down-select against Rivet and a production award may not land until fiscal 2028, later than the 2027 scaled delivery Anduril had previously targeted.
Sixty-one billion dollars, and a rumor of one hundred
Anduril has raised more than $11 billion. The May 2026 Series H, $5 billion at a $61 billion valuation led by Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, more than doubled the $30.5 billion mark Founders Fund set with a $2.5 billion Series G in June 2025, a round that included what Founders Fund told TechCrunch was its largest-ever check. CEO Brian Schimpf said 2025 revenue doubled to $2.2 billion. Headcount is around 7,000. The company is still private. Schimpf said in July 2026 it is in no rush to IPO.
The controversy is the next number. Reuters reported on July 24, 2026 that Anduril was in talks for a further round at roughly $100 billion, a mark that would put it near Northrop Grumman, with a possible two-stage structure tying a second tranche to financial benchmarks. Anduril said no decision had been made. As of mid-September 2026 the round had not been confirmed as closed. Separate reporting to prospective investors of roughly $4.3 billion in 2026 sales and about $1.2 billion of operating losses tied to Arsenal-1 scale-up has not been confirmed by the company as audited results. A private company can print a $61 billion cap table on doubling revenue. It cannot indefinitely fund a hyperscale munitions factory on hope. The next round, or an IPO, will have to show that $2.2 billion is the start of a prime-contractor P&L rather than the peak of a prototype shop.
What to watch
The near-term hardware tests are dated. Arsenal-1 is supposed to add Roadrunner, Barracuda, and a classified platform by the end of 2026. The first Anduril-HD Hyundai autonomous surface vessel is due in the water in October. Taiwan's Altius-700M and Altius-600ISR deliveries are targeted for the fourth quarter. Live quarterback control of Fury from an F-35 is expected in weeks or months from the September 14 briefing. Production Fury aircraft are expected off the Ohio line in early 2027.
The strategic tests take longer. The CCA autonomy down-select, still aimed at summer 2027, decides whether Lattice or a rival stack is the brain of America's robotic wingman. The soldier-headset down-select, potentially fiscal 2028, decides whether Luckey's return to mixed reality becomes a program of record or another IVAS disappointment. Golden Dome space-based interceptor teams, Anduril's included, cleared a first design-review gate in August 2026, with a 2028 demonstration target sitting under a funding risk: most of the fiscal 2027 request depends on a reconciliation bill. Watch also whether the reported $100 billion round closes, whether the $1.98 billion Kuwait counter-drone foreign military sale becomes a signed contract, and whether Poland buys Fury or Thunder to go with the Barracuda line. Anduril has already proven it can win prototype competitions against the primes. The next two years will show whether it can deliver hundreds of combat jets, thousands of missiles, and a headset soldiers will actually wear.
