Waymo to end Uber robotaxi exclusivity in Austin and Atlanta

Waymo has told Uber it will end their exclusive robotaxi arrangement in Austin and Atlanta and begin offering rides through its own Waymo app in both cities in January 2028, while keeping vehicles available on Uber until the existing contract expires in May 2028. The Financial Times reported the two companies held internal discussions about a broader split amid tensions, including conflicting autonomous-vehicle policy proposals they are pushing in different U.S. markets. The move follows the wind-down of their Phoenix partnership earlier this year and sharpens the rivalry between the largest U.S. robotaxi operator and the largest ride-hailing platform.
