OpenAI slashes GPT-5.6 Luna price 80% amid Chinese AI pressure
OpenAI cut API pricing for its GPT-5.6 Luna model by 80% to $0.20/$1.20 per million input/output tokens (from $1/$6) and cut Terra pricing 20% to $2/$12 per million tokens (from $2.50/$15), leaving flagship Sol pricing unchanged. The cuts, made around July 30, 2026, just three weeks after GPT-5.6's public launch, are widely read as a response to cheap, capable open-weight Chinese models such as DeepSeek, Kimi K3 and GLM eroding frontier-lab pricing power.
