DeepMind reshuffle: Hassabis steps back, Jeff Dean departs
Demis Hassabis moved from Google DeepMind CEO to chairman of DeepMind and chief scientist for all of Alphabet on August 5, with DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu becoming senior vice president overseeing Gemini development and frontier research and reporting directly to Sundar Pichai. The same week, longtime Google chief scientist Jeff Dean and senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat left after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, an independent AI research automation startup backed by Google as an investor and cloud provider, and Alphabet shares fell roughly 4-5% on the news.
