Hassabis moves to Chairman as Google's Jeff Dean departs
Google DeepMind announced on August 5 that co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis is moving to Chairman of the division and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, handing day-to-day operations and the Gemini roadmap to CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu, who becomes Senior Vice President reporting directly to Sundar Pichai. The same week, longtime Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean left after 27 years, joined by fellow veteran researchers Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, to start an AI-for-science startup called Discovery Loop, in which Google is taking an investment stake.
