Google moves DeepMind's AI safety team into Global Affairs

Google is shifting a roughly 90-person AI responsibility team, covering chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear model risk plus human-AI interaction and chatbot psychological effects, out of Google DeepMind and into its Global Affairs policy organization effective early September, according to reports on August 27. Some DeepMind researchers raised concerns about losing independence and direct access to Gemini developers, though the team's leader told staff its research mission, compute, and staffing would stay unchanged.
