Shane Legg launches DeepMind Institute on AGI

Google DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg launched the DeepMind Institute on September 16 to broaden public discussion of artificial general intelligence, telling the Financial Times that capabilities must not get ahead of safety. The institute will cover science, education, society, policy, philosophy and human flourishing, opening with three essays on AI safety, economic policy and principles for a new utopianism. Legg called Dario Amodei's proposal to slow frontier releases interesting directionally and worth considering, said it is premature to declare AGI achieved despite recent claims by Nvidia and OpenAI executives, and stood by his forecast of a 50 percent chance of minimal AGI by 2028.
