NHTSA orders Tesla to answer Cybercab certification questions

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on September 15 that Tesla must answer by September 30 whether it properly self-certified the steering-wheel-free Cybercab against federal motor vehicle safety standards. Electrek reported the agency issued a Special Order on September 10 requiring sworn answers on temporary driver controls, occupant touchscreen controls, speed and geofence limits, and how Tesla certified a vehicle with no foot brake. NHTSA approved a Part 555 exemption for Amazon's Zoox in July; Tesla has no such exemption and began paid Austin Cybercab rides on September 3.
