Westinghouse sets Salem Co-60 target install this fall

An American Nuclear Society feature dated September 3-4, 2026 said Westinghouse, Nordion and PSEG Nuclear still plan to install the first cobalt targets later this fall at Salem Units 1 and 2 in New Jersey, with a first commercial Co-60 harvest around 2029. The companies formalized long-term agreements in January 2026 for the first commercial-scale Co-60 production platform in US pressurized water reactors, using Westinghouse Cobalt Burnable Absorber inserts; the US currently has no domestic Co-60 production and the project could meet at least half of US demand. PSEG filed a license amendment request with the NRC in late 2025 that includes a generic element other utilities could reuse.
