Spain grants WeRide first national L4 permit

Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic issued the first national permit for Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles on public roads to WeRide, Uber and AVOMO on September 10, 2026 under the DGT ES-AV framework. The partners said it is the first national approval for WeRide's GXR in the European Union and the start of mapping and route validation in Greater Madrid, with an initial 20 vehicles carrying an onboard specialist. Commercial service is targeted by the end of 2026, the first joint WeRide-Uber deployment in Europe and the fourth of 15 cities in their partnership.
