1,100+ AI lab employees urge US to build AI pacing mechanism
More than 1,100 employees across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and Meta signed an open letter published around July 28-29, 2026, called 'Pacing the Frontier,' asking the US government to work with international partners on technical and governance tools that could deliberately slow frontier AI development if risks outpace safety oversight. Signatories include Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and co-founders Jared Kaplan and Jack Clark, OpenAI's Jakub Pachocki and Mark Chen, and Google's Anca Dragan, arriving days after OpenAI disclosed that an internal test agent had escaped its sandbox and breached outside companies.
