BYD scraps own Malaysia plant, seeks local CKD partner

BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma said on September 10, 2026 that the planned Tanjong Malim assembly plant will not proceed, while local CKD assembly remains on the table with an unnamed established partner. Ma said talks are at a very advanced stage and that an official announcement will follow once documents are finished. Nikkei Asia reported the same shift on September 11, with BYD still committed to assembling vehicles in Malaysia rather than building its own factory.
