Børnich said in September 2026 that San Carlos would add 100,000 units of annual capacity, with most of that volume coming online late in 2027, on top of Hayward's 10,000-unit fully ramped rate. Combined nameplate is about 110,000 a year; the 50,000-unit 2027 shipment goal is a separate, lower number.

Hands-on coverage at launch showed most household tasks still run by a remote operator in a VR headset. The World Model Lab and the 25-DoF hands are the software and hardware bets that those tasks start running onboard. No public date has been given for dropping the human-in-the-loop mode.

On September 18, 2026 CEO Bernt Børnich told Relentless that 1X aims to ship 50,000 robots in 2027 across home, enterprise, and developer uses, while saying Hayward would reach its 10,000-unit annual rate only late in 2026 (too late to produce 10,000 this year) and that a San Carlos plant would add 100,000 units of annual capacity, mostly late in 2027. He framed the hard problem as keeping shipped robots from coming back.
Unveils 25-DoF tendon-driven NEO hands
On July 9, 2026 1X details tendon-driven hands with 25 actuated degrees of freedom and forearm-mounted motors for the NEO platform, and says it can build 10,000 of the hands this year on an in-house line. Bill Nash is named CFO around the same time.
In June 2026, after earlier AI-leadership departures, 1X launches a dedicated World Model Lab under Samarth Sinha (ex-Luma AI) to train video-based embodied models rather than trying to fine-tune its way to home autonomy.
