Overview
Boeing's crew capsule for NASA's Commercial Crew Program, built to ferry astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station under a $4.2B NASA award (alongside SpaceX's Crew Dragon).
Grounded from crewed ISS rotations after the 2024 Crew Flight Test's thruster failures and helium leaks. In November 2025 NASA and Boeing modified the Commercial Crew contract to reduce Boeing's committed crewed flights from six to four (two now optional) and repurposed the next mission, Starliner-1, as an uncrewed, cargo-only flight to validate system fixes - targeted for no earlier than April 2026 and, per reporting current as of late July 2026, still pending launch (informally discussed around August 2026). NASA has not yet confirmed a date for Starliner's return to crewed service.
