Current status

The AlphaFold database has been used by 3M+ researchers across 190 countries and is the basis of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. AlphaFold 3 is accessible via the AlphaFold Server for non-commercial research. In late July 2026 reports said DeepMind dismantled the dedicated AlphaFold team, reassigning most of the original paper's authors over the prior year to Gemini, enzyme design, fusion, genomics and Isomorphic Labs work as the lab pivots to a Gemini-centered, agent-based structure; several departing researchers, including 2024 Nobel laureate John Jumper, joined Anthropic.

    Isomorphic Labs first-in-human oncology trials

    Advance the first AI-designed drug candidates from the IsoDDE/AlphaFold pipeline into first-in-human clinical trials, beginning with oncology - a milestone Hassabis said at Davos in January 2026 had slipped from an original end-2025 target to end of 2026. As of September 14, 2026 no patient has been publicly reported dosed with an Isomorphic-designed compound; president Colin Murdoch has said the company is staffing up and getting very close to dosing patients, with the ~$2.1B Series B (May 2026) funding the preclinical work needed before an IND filing.

  1. Google offers frontier models to 200 European researchers

    On Oct. 14, 2026 Google DeepMind and Google Cloud said they will give up to 200 European scientific researchers direct access to frontier models and $3 million in compute credits through the EU RAISE initiative. The blog names AlphaFold 3, WeatherNext, AlphaGenome, AlphaEvolve, and AlphaEarth Foundations. It does not say how researchers are chosen, when access starts, or how the credits are divided.

    The Financial Times reported on July 29 that Google DeepMind dissolved the dedicated team behind AlphaFold, its Nobel Prize-winning protein-structure prediction system, reassigning most of the original paper's authors to Gemini and other science-AI projects over the past year. Nobel laureate John Jumper left in June for Anthropic along with two AlphaFold colleagues, and roughly a quarter of the original AlphaFold authors have exited the company entirely, though DeepMind says the AlphaFold Server, database, and AlphaFold 3 remain available and the technology itself is not being discontinued.
