Cybercab (Robotaxi)

Overview

Tesla's purpose-built two-seat autonomous vehicle for its Robotaxi network - no steering wheel, no pedals, vision-only FSD. Designed as an income-generating asset on the Tesla Network at a sub-$30,000 target price and ~$0.20/mile operating cost. Robotaxi service today runs on Model Y vehicles across seven metros - Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa driverless, plus the San Francisco Bay Area with a safety monitor - while the dedicated Cybercab fleet is now in early production at Giga Texas.

Tesla began commercial Cybercab rides in Austin on September 3, 2026, adding the purpose-built two-seater to its paid Robotaxi app alongside Model Ys and saying it would expand gradually. The same day NHTSA opened Open Audit Query AQ26002 covering an estimated 1,000 Cybercabs and asking how Tesla self-certified a vehicle with no steering wheel, pedals or conventional mirrors against FMVSS. Texas DMV records as of September 2, 2026 still listed 420 Tesla vehicles authorized for driverless operations in the state, including 45 Cybercabs. The first production unit rolled off the Giga Texas line on February 17, 2026, with continuous production from April, public-road engineering tests from June 30, and employee campus rides from July 10 (245+ units staged by July 19). Musk continues to describe a slow initial ramp ('stretched-out S-curve') followed by exponential growth into year-end.
